Fellow Traveller cranked out tons of games I’m excited for in their Story-Rich Showcase. One that particularly took my fancy is Burn-9. Burn-9 is a political spy thriller visual novel that puts the player in the seat of the Operator, watching a mission take place from afar. It has earned the description of a “reverse Metal Gear” because instead of playing Snake, you’ll be coordinating things through your communication systems from base. You aren’t entirely in charge, though, and your higher-ups will pile on the pressure as you decide what to do next.
Whilst Burn-9 is a visual novel, players will still be busy. You’ll be monitoring surveillance systems in real-time, hacking, gathering intel, and deciding who to trust with what. I love the mix of gameplay ideas, and the retro UI and graphical style look sublime. I’m delighted to hear the voice acting sounds strong, too, as so much of Burn-9’s success will be down to characterisation and their portrayal.
A demo is out for Steam Next Fest, which I will be covering as part of my Steam Next Fest coverage. You can wishlist Burn-9 on Steam.
