I love the new trend of games based around photography. I’ve just bought Toem 2 today as a great example. Under Canopies takes a different approach. This game is a first-person crafting, farming, and exploration game that I guess you could call cosy survival? The pastel colours, low-poly vibes, and generally calming forest environment draw you in. Anytime you spot some wildlife, you’ll be able to take some photos of them, or perhaps you’d prefer some waterfalls or night skies. Quite how pressured the survival elements are in the game remains to be seen, but I can’t imagine it being too stressful or taxing.
Learning to live with the wildlife and earning their trust is a key mechanic in the game. Under Canopies wants you to interact with them, feed them, observe them, and find out hidden species or behaviours by becoming a trusted member of the forest ecosystem. I’ve also spotted maps and compasses for exploration, and cooking with foraged ingredients. I like the idea of survival games that let me live gently, and with the added photography gameplay, I’m sold on the concept.
I can’t wait to dive in and I won’t need to wait too long. Under Canopies launches into early access on 23rd October. You can wishlist Under Canopies on Steam.
