Formula Legends has come on leaps and bounds since its release. With the latest two DLC packs, we get a new era of cars, complete with totally new gameplay mechanics, and a selection of new tracks.
The Iconic Tracks pack has three versions of Austria, two of Malaysia, and a Bahrain circuit. These all give nods to the circuits they are inspired by, yet all three have a verticality and camber to them that give them a rollercoaster feel. Bahrain ebbs and flows very differently in the final sector, making it a mini coaster. Malaysia is full of tighter-than-expected corners that look like 90-degree turns, but are far sharper. Austria has sweeping hills and brings a vintage version alongside a classic and modern take on a mashup of previous Austrian GP tracks.
The Late 20’s pack brings Azerbaijan as a circuit, but also a Late 20s era of cars. These come with flexi aero modes, and on dedicated straights on all modern circuits in the game, you can press a button to flip to a faster aero mode. Watching the wings change is very anime, but cool. Alongside that, an overtake boost recharges each lap for one second if you are a second behind the car in front, and that’s in addition to any boost charge you’ve gained through breaking. Lastly, there is a battery mode system to juggle. There are three states of charge, eco, standard, and power, and these will alter your acceleration and top speeds. The battery replaces fuel for this era, and when you combine the battery with boosts and aero, the differences of speed can be huge. It is really interesting to see how all these gadgets play out, and whilst you can automate some of them, it definitely makes for the most multitasking of drives for Formula Legends.
Alongside these, a free update added a 50’s vintage car and a vintage version of Italy that combines the circuit with a giant looping oval, with two DTM-styled chicanes in the straights. You can also change point systems in the game.
Formula Legends continues to grow in strength and power, becoming an excellent racer over time. Enjoy the video overview, complete with some terrible driving from me as I get used to the new cars and tracks! They’re the trickiest yet.
