Pine: A Tale of Loss is a game coming out later this year which I’ve had the privilege of accessing an advanced preview of. It is a meditative chop wood/carry water game that calms you down and asks you to focus on the emotional cycle of processing grief. You play as a woodsman who has lost his wife and over the course of a year, you’ll experience fleeting memories and recollections of treasured moments together. To help process his grief, the woodsman then carves wooden statues of his wife as a mini game.
Through its calm, repetitive daily tasks, Pine clears your mind and focuses in on the emotions of happy memories bringing forward guilt, grief, anger and numb sadness. As part of this special preview video, I share how Pine: A Tale of Loss helped create a space for me to deal with my grief. I lost my dad a few months ago and my mum has been in a coma and hospital across the year too. As I’ve been so swamped with caring for my mum, I’ve not had time to really process my dad’s death at all. Pine: A Tale of Loss may have kickstarted some of that process.
