Toffee Cats takes a leaf out of Ronsill’s old adverts. It does exactly what it says on the tin. It’s a premium (read “paid”) lines game that replaces lines with cats. Players are asked to reconnect the heads to the tails so that the entire playing grid is filled with kitty goodness. No cat bodies can cross over, so it is a basic game of logic.
Whilst having all these severed cats could be nightmare fuel in other settings, in Toffee Cats, it is wholesome, hand-drawn cuteness. By clicking and dragging from head to tail, a cat’s body auto-fills the grid. There is an undo button if you need it, and if you accidentally overwrite another cat’s body and backtrack, the game auto-restores the previous cat. These are great quality-of-life features that make playing Toffee Cats effortless.
The big boon here is the incremental level difficulty. There are 950 levels to solve, spread across ever-expanding playing grids. In theory, with bigger levels and more cats, the complexity should rise with it. That isn’t always the case because experienced puzzle players can spot patterns in level design quickly and easily. As there are no additional gameplay mechanics, and this is more of a visual glow-up, what’s here is great, but it lacks individuality to let it stand out from a crowded puzzle crowd. On the flipside, it’s £1.69 for hours of casual time-wasting fun.
Perfect for Steam Deck, Toffee Cats works best in short, sharp doses as a quick brain train before doing something else. These kinds of line puzzles are everywhere, and whilst it plays well and has tons of content, the lack of a unique twist prevents it from becoming a great game. Basic, but well-made.
