Cats and hidden object games – name a more prolific duo in the cosy games world at the moment! Whisker Wanderlust: The Wonderous Journey is the second in the series of hidden object games taking place in a cat-filled world. There are ten pieces of art to unlock, each filled with over 200 items to find. This game takes the kitchen sink approach to hiding objects.

By far the star of the show is the artwork. Each level is a detailed think painted, hand-drawn land, sea, or townscape that is full of all kinds of quirky details. In a street scene, cats are selling, cooking, smoking, partying, and having a bustling time around the Chinese dragon. Underwater, we have detailed whale and coral formations. Another has a castle in the sky with retro planes and kitties with guns in a clockwork world. There is more than a hint of Ghibli wonder about them, but they look beautiful. You can zoom in for great detail, or pan out to see the whole effect.
Each artwork has upwards of 200 items hidden in it, across five categories. Those categories change from level to level, but there will always be balls of yarn and cans of tuna to find. They are hidden in a way that integrates them into the world around them, so it might be a blue yarn ball in one eye socket of a giant fish, whilst the other eye is luminous blue to hide it in plain sight. Elsewhere, gems might form part of an artwork, or envelopes will be hiding in a busy stack of books. A brown fork might blend into brown wooden frame designs. Whilst you are never a few seconds away from finding something new, the items are well blended into the environment. An 11th level can also be unlocked by being a perfectionist. If you do get stuck, a 90-second hint cooldown is available, but you can speed it up by exiting and reentering a level as it resets. I started to do this on levels where the beautiful but short music loops started to annoy me. It is one of my only complaints about the game – longer music loops next time, pretty please.

Anyone who enjoys hidden object games will enjoy Whisker Wanderlust. It is on the easier side of the genre, more because you can’t move more than a few pixels before you spot something hidden than because levels are hard to solve! As the game comes with a large selection of Steam achievements, it is constantly dropping you a dopamine hit for doing well. It’ll keep you going for around 3 hours and entertained throughout.
