Heaven Crawler was announced during the Latin American Games Showcase and stood out to me because of its clear inspirations. Carbon Machina, the indie developer behind the title, was inspired to tell a story of loss as two of the team lost their fathers at a young age. They clicked with Fumito Ueda’s stories of loss and companionship and wanted to try their Zelda/Ico take on dungeon exploration.
Heaven Crawler will have:
- An early-2000s aesthetic using fog and bloom
- Roguelike and RPG elements, as each death changes not just your abilities, but the tower you are climbing evolves, too
- mechanical arms that allow your character to traverse and attack
- Huge boss battles
- An emotional story
I love the idea behind this, and taking the best of indie storytelling and Zelda and Ico’s world-building prowess sounds like a dream title in the making. The trailer looks very promising and showcases the more action-oriented nature of the game compared to its influences.
You can wishlist Heaven Crawl on Steam. There will be a Kickstarter to support the title launching in September, and you can be notified when the Kickstarter launches.
