Despite (or because of) the slightly ee-by-gum Yorkshire narrator’s accent, I’ve got my eyes on The Detectorists Guild. This is a cosy, quaint, metal-detecting RPG set in 1999’s Yorkshire countryside. It’s billed as a low-pressure affair, playing asJames, who roams the local village in search of buried treasure. I love the mash-up of 2.5D artwork, as the game blends pixels and voxels to create a retro-modern visual flair. There’s a mystery to be solved whilst collecting artefacts for the local museum.
The Dectorists Guild caught my eye because:
- Metal detecting screams cosy and engrossing gameplay loops when done right
- There’s a quaint 90s world with a 90s visual style
- You can donate your finds to the local museum to learn about your village’s history
- It seems cosy but meaningfully productive, with quests to complete.
A demo is out now, which I’ll cover if it’s part of Steam Next Fest. You can wishlist The Detectorists Guild on Steam.
